San Luis Obispo-Santa Barbara-Los Angeles-San Diego (Pacific Surfliner)

It’s impossible to separate California from surfing, and when you take the Pacific Surfliner, you’ll see for yourself why that is the case. Hugging the Pacific Coast from San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara, into Los Angeles and on to San Diego, it offers passengers a perfect view of the Southern California seascape, and the waves that have kept surfers coming back for more.

One of the shortest of Amtrak’s routes, the Pacific Surfliner stretches for just 563 kilometers (350 mi) with 12 departure times taking passengers to the doorstep of a multitude of attractions and activities. San Diego boasts Sea World®, as well as the typical shops, restaurants, and beaches options. Disneyland® and Disney California Adventure® Park are in Anaheim, while Los Angeles offers a host of studio tour and world-famous beaches like Venice Beach.

The northern half of the route boasts truly spectacular views as the train hugs the Pacific Coast front Ventura through Santa Barbara to the tiny community of Surf. The journey then ends at the 250-year old city of San Luis Obispo where charming, historic inns serve delicious wines from the nearby Edna Valley.

The Pacific Surfliner would hardly be popular if it didn’t cater to the needs of true surfer enthusiasts. Stopping close to a variety of favorite surfing beaches, like Rincon, Zuma or Malibu, the cars also provide special racks to carry surf boards – and bikes if that’s your thing!
